I am...
A CITIZEN I have five years of experience teaching with a number of El Sistema-inspired programs. The El Sistema music teaching method initially intrigued me and eventually became my passion because of its focus on social justice through the lens of music education. If you are interested in learning more about the history and different aspects of the El Sistema method, you can go here. AN ARTIST I have been playing the cello for 15 years and received a Bachelor's in Music Performance from DePaul University in 2015. I discovered my love for teaching the cello 5 years ago as a freshman in college. A TEACHER I have taught people, ranging from ages 8 to 24, how to play cello in Chicago Peru (in both English and Spanish), and Juneau using the Suzuki and El Sistema methods. I am certified to teach cello with Suzuki book 1, which is based upon a method that emphasizes children's natural ability to learn new languages, including music. More information about the Suzuki method can be found here. A SCHOLAR In the Spring of 2016, I earned my Master of Arts in Teaching Music, K-12 at University of Alaska Southeast. I student taught at two different schools in the Juneau School district for nine months and also performed in a string quartet, The Mendenhall Quartet, and with the Juneau Symphony. Besides teaching and playing music, I love hiking, writing, reading, photography, and spending time with friends. If you would like to read about my personal experiences while living in Juneau and undergoing my first year of teaching, check out my blog! |
